Although having legal permanent residency (or a green card as its most commonly known as) allows you the ability to live and work legally in the United States, becoming a citizen has many more advantages that will be beneficial to you and your loved ones. Here are just some of the reasons that you should consider becoming a citizen if you are eligible.

The Power To Vote:
Undeniably the most valuable privilege given to all U.S citizens, is the ability to to vote in local, state, and federal elections, including voting for the president. Naturalizing empowers you to make your voice heard and become a part of your community’s electorate.

Citizenship is Permanent Residency, Whereas LPR status Can Be Taken Away:
Under certain circumstances, a green card can be revoked, making you vulnerable to deportation. Once you become a citizen, it cannot be taken away, regardless of any event that would typically jeopardize an individual’s green card status.

Serve On A Jury:
Part of becoming a citizen is attending jury duty. This is one of the responsibilities you accept when you take the oath of allegiance.

Access To Government Aid Programs:
Certain federal aid programs are only available to U.S citizens, including access to financial aid programs.

The Ability to Bring Family Members and Spouses Into The U.S:
Once you become a citizen, you may petition for a spouse, children, or other immediate family members to obtain a green card and your wait time is much shorter than a legal permanent resident.

Apply For Federal Jobs:
Citizenship provides you the opportunity to apply for jobs from the federal government.

Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible for citizenship, there are several eligibility requirements, including but not limited to:

-If you obtained your green card through a marriage-based petition and have had it for three years;
-If you obtained it through a different petition and have had it for at least five years;
-Have resided in the United States for at least 2.5 years prior to filing without making any trips outside of the U.S lasting longer than 6 months.
-If you are a male that had your green card between the ages of 18-31, you were registered for selective service
